The aim of the PE Department at Roysia Middle School is to empower our learners with the knowledge, values, skills and personal qualities required to be confident and keen to take part in physical activities. We endeavour to provide our pupils with the knowledge that enables them to make positive lifestyle choices; resulting in active, healthy and happy individuals. We value physical literacy as a key aspect of child development and learners are taught to consider and appreciate the physical and cognitive aspects of physical activity and sport. Leadership, creativity and team work are the core values that shape the way we teach our curriculum. We believe that PE is unique in its ability to develop the ‘whole’ person and foster physical, mental and social well-being.
The PE department offers a vast array of sporting opportunities for all of our learners. We value high quality PE lessons that foster independence, initiative and resilience. Indeed, teaching within the department was judged as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted inspectors in 2013. Our extended curriculum offers opportunities for our learners’ relationships, social development, fun and health to be enhanced and promoted. We also firmly believe that competitive sport and opportunities for all can co-exist in a busy school environment. We offer many opportunities for pupils to compete in a wide range of sports and activities in both inter and intra school environments whilst maintaining the principle that competitive sport and Physical Education should be perceived as two separate entities. Community links are an integral part of our school sport with excellent links forged with clubs in the area allowing all pupils the opportunity of a sustained healthy lifestyle outside of school.
